Reliquary Bust of Saint Rossore by Donatello (Italian, ca. 1386-1466)
About 1435 Donatello was commissioned to make a container for the head of the early Christian martyr Saint Rossore. He transformed the traditional reliquary by endowing the third-century solider with the features of a contemporary person, thereby laying the groundwork for the Renaissance portrait bust. In effect, the relic of the actual saint (his skull) gained an outward living aspect. On loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City from Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, Pisa, Italia.
